Record Travel Expected This Memorial Day Weekend: A Surge in Numbers

Get ready for a bustling Memorial Day weekend, travelers! According to AAA's latest forecast, we're about to witness a record number of Americans hitting the road and taking to the skies. If you're planning a trip, you won't be alone—far from it.

Surpassing Pre-Pandemic Levels

This year, AAA anticipates that a whopping 43.8 million people will venture at least 50 miles from home over the holiday weekend. That's a 4% increase from last year and just shy of the 2005 record of 44 million travelers. Paula Twidale, AAA Travel’s senior vice president, expressed excitement over these numbers, saying, "We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years. We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead."

Hitting the Road

Road trips will be the star of the show this Memorial Day weekend. A record 38.4 million people are expected to travel by car, the highest number since AAA began tracking in 2000. While gas prices are hovering around $3.57 per gallon, similar to last year, AAA has cautioned that prices could increase due to fluctuating oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and Ukraine. So, it might be a good idea to fill up early and plan for potential price hikes.

Taking to the Skies

Air travel is also set to soar. Around 3.5 million people are expected to fly, making it the busiest Memorial Day weekend for airports in nearly two decades. The last time airports were this crowded was in 2005 when 3.6 million travelers took to the skies as the industry rebounded from the Sept. 11 attacks. If you're flying, prepare for packed terminals and long lines at security.

Exploring Other Options

Demand for buses, trains, and cruises is bouncing back too. An estimated 1.9 million people are expected to opt for these modes of transportation, marking a 5.6% increase from last year. Twidale noted, "This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all. Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways."

Plan Ahead for a Smooth Trip

With so many people traveling, it's essential to plan ahead. Whether you're driving, flying, or taking a bus or train, make sure to book accommodations and tickets early. Check traffic reports and flight statuses, and pack plenty of patience. The roads and skies will be busy, but with some preparation, your Memorial Day weekend can be a fantastic start to the summer season.

So, buckle up, pack your bags, and get ready for an adventure. This Memorial Day weekend promises to be one for the record books!
