Facial Recognition Technology Extends to More US Airports for TSA PreCheck Users

The experience of navigating through security lines at airports might be one of the most unpredictable parts of flying, often characterized by long waits as security personnel verify each traveler's boarding pass, government ID, and face. However, efforts to streamline this process are underway as more airlines and airports adopt facial recognition technology, aimed at reducing ID check times and accommodating the increasing demand for air travel in the US. Recently, United Airlines has joined Delta Air Lines in a pilot program with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to implement the TSA PreCheck Touchless Identity Solution for PreCheck travelers.

Katy Nastro, a travel expert and spokesperson for Going.com, believes this initiative will alleviate the common issue of lengthy security lines at airports across the country. The program's introduction is seen as a significant leap towards modernizing air travel processes, allowing travelers to bypass the traditional ID verification step.

This new technology is currently available to United and Delta passengers with TSA PreCheck at seven prominent US airports, including Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) with Delta Air Lines. United Airlines offers it at LAX and O’Hare International Airport (ORD). Furthermore, Clear, known for its expedited security services, has also incorporated facial recognition technology at its checkpoints.

The article goes into detail about how travelers can opt into or out of the facial recognition system, the benefits of the technology, and how it operates. United's passengers, for instance, can choose to participate by indicating their consent through the airline's mobile app when checking in. This selection enables a seamless process at security checkpoints, where a photo is taken instead of manual ID and boarding pass verification.

The implementation of facial recognition for TSA PreCheck members also necessitates certain prerequisites, such as having a passport uploaded to the United MileagePlus account and being at least 18 years old. United has expanded the use of Touchless ID to include bag drop at O’Hare, where passengers can have their faces scanned for baggage tagging.

Delta Air Lines has also seen success with its Digital ID program, initially launched at Atlanta and Detroit airports in 2021 and later expanded. The program has effectively reduced the average interaction time at TSA PreCheck from 20-25 seconds to 7-10 seconds, contributing to a more efficient airport environment.

As the TSA partners with airlines to test and refine these biometric systems, the goal is to enhance the travel experience while managing the increasing volume of passengers. Despite some concerns regarding privacy and the thoroughness of security checks, the TSA ensures that data is anonymized, encrypted, and deleted within 180 days.

The introduction of facial recognition technology and self-screening systems at airports like Las Vegas' Harry Reid International Airport represents a significant step towards a more streamlined and efficient future for air travel. While these innovations promise convenience, travelers are reminded to still carry government-issued IDs as a precaution.
